there was something that was just on the news aboutthe mirt how anyone could buy them. They where using them to change the lights and it was causing accidents. i love using mine especailly if u got someone in the car and wanana screw with them or if im on my way to a fire call to get traffic moving. Its better then tryin to risk going through a red and someone blasting u.
Those things don't so shit. They aren't coded. You need the real 3M Opticom transmitter. Think about it, if it's legal - it's not gonna be the real thing. These things just blast out IR beams hoping it will trigger the sensor.
I don't mean to be a ball buster here, but before you guys go shelling out $400 to some noob, you better do your research.

I'm an electrician for the city and work on st. lights and traffic lights...I dont think its possible to change the lights because everything is on a timer or a loop cut in the street, in chicago at least. But yea better research more on that before paying 4 hundo for a pos!
it is possible how do you think ambulances an fire trucks change the lights?? There was something on the news about how in california they were trying to put together some legislative stuff about making it illegal to have one of these... so they must work to some degree.
they had this thing on the news here in houston too.. they bought one off that site (retatards gave the site where u can get it...) and they used it and it worked on alot of the lights... they only tested the main lights tho.
a lot of traffic lights are still timer run only. So it WONT work at all for them. Other traffic lights use mass sensors in the road, which detect when a vehicle is over them. Some traffic lights use radar sensors, which are the only ones I could see something like this working for.
Ambulance, fire trucks, etc. send a signal to certain lights to change all directions to red, so they can pass through the intersection easier.

One thing you forgot to mention that the city officials had decided to re-program the lights and their offical transmitters to throw the unofficial ones off.
wtf ppl do this anyway. Life is already unfair. Why makes it more complicated?

Yea, they do have a system that changes the lights, it's the Opticom system by 3M. This fake thing isn't gonna work right tho. The real transmitter is coded, and tells the traffic light what kind of vehicle it is. This fake thing is just a bunch of flashing IR LEDs. The reason they work hit and miss is b/c they flash in random patterns. These patterns are sometimes interpreted by the sensors as the real transmitter. This only works on the basic patterns, the more advances ones are too complicated. These fake things have no chance at the newer Reporter systems (pictured below).

It doesn't matter of the light is timed, loop triggered, or radar. This is a totally different system. It used a coded IR transmitter and recievers that are placed at the lights. You won't know it's there unless you know what to look for. They DO NOT change all the lights to red. It changes the lights in the direction the emergency vehichle is coming to green. It wouldn't help if it made them all red - the emergency vehicle might become trapped in traffic.
the mirts are the real deal. there was a segment on the news on them. apparantly the manufacturer has raised the price to 799 now to combat the general public from buying them and to appease the law enforcement in cali.
there is also legislation in the works to make them illegal to the general public.
ot was actually interesting. they sat on the side of the road at this intersection and after 2.5 minutes traffic was backed up for over a 1/4 mile.
